The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to go 4-0 this week against the Philadelphia Eagles. That would give them just their fourth 4-0 start in franchise history. The last time the Steelers started the season undefeated through the first four games was in 1979.
In 1973, 1978, and 1979 the team began with 4-0 records. Two of those years the Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl and all three seasons the team made the playoffs.
It’s kind of amazing to believe the Steeles don’t have more 4-0 starts in their team history.
Since 1979 the Steelers have been to four Super Bowls and won two of them. They have had countless successful seasons through the 1990’s and 2000’s. They should probably have had more rings and more Super Bowl appearances in that time frame. Yet they haven’t started a season with a 4-0 record since the 1979 season.
Not once did Jerome Bettis start a season 4-0 with the Steelers.
Troy Polamalu never played on a 4-0 team during his NFL career.
Ben Roethlisberger currently has a record of 147-71-1 but has yet to start a year at 4-0.
If you had told me this stat before this week I don’t think I would have believed it. The Steelers have had so many great seasons since 1979 that I would have never thought that none of them started with a record of 4-0 or better.
That could all change this Sunday. Ben Roethlisberger has a great chance to get the Steelers to 4-0 on the season. And if history is any indication, 2020 could be a big year for the Steelers.
